Using Essential Oils in the Classroom can Help Children Learn Better

I use essential oils extensively around the house: to promote a calming environment, to make natural personal products, household cleaners, for baths, etc. However, the wonderful benefits of essential oils can be applied beyond the four walls of the house too. Have you ever been to a spa or a salon and smelled the calming notes of lemongrass or orange in the air? These places use aromatherapy to help people relax and enjoy their spa experience. Essentials oils are also used in offices and schools. When my kids are preparing for tests or school projects, I make it a point to diffuse some essential oils to help them remain focused. There are studies that prove essential oils can be very beneficial in supporting a learning environment, and many schools encourage the use of essential oils in the classroom. 

Tests and homework:
Test times can be very stressful for children, be it early school or high school. Whether your child is preparing to take the SATs or is simply memorizing rhymes, they could use a little help with staying focused. Essential oils can be very helpful in creating an environment that will help the child remain focused on the task and soak in the information better.

Essential oils can help support a learning environment:
There is some scientific backing to the idea that essential oils can positively influence moods and emotions. In a competitive environment like school, these properties can be especially useful. A child is bound to absorb more information if the environment is calm, positive, and engaging.

Essential oils can help reduce feelings of nervousness and tension:
Essential oils can positively affect children’s emotions when it comes to academic performance. Like adults, children also face moments of uncertainty and nervousness; these feeling are more common during test time. When diffused in classrooms, essential oils can help reduce the feeling of stress and anxiousness in children, helping them prepare mentally and physically for the task at hand. A stress-free child will naturally be more confident, which in turn will impact their performance.

When it comes to promoting focus and memory, some essential oils are more effective than the others. Here are a few of my favorites: 

Rosemary: If your child is preparing for a major exam or working on a crucial project, make sure you diffuse some rosemary in the room. Rosemary is well-known for its properties that help maintain concentration1. It can also help reduce feelings of nervous tension.
Peppermint: The cool, minty scent of peppermint can help drive away lethargy and energize.  According to one study, its scent can decrease feelings of anxiousness when facing tasks that seem physically and mentally daunting. It can help support and maintain the child’s focus2 when they are preparing or taking a major exam.

Other essential oils: Besides rosemary and peppermint, black pepper, bergamot, and vetiver essential oils can also help promote alertness. The bright scent of bergamot is uplifting, and it can help reduce feelings of stress. Black pepper and vetiver have high levels of sesquiterpenes which promote alertness and focus. Vetiver has a grounding effect on emotions, while black pepper can soothe anxious feelings. When diffused in a classroom, they can help children remain calm, relaxed, and energetic.
